LANCASTER, Pa. — Junior attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) scored with 11.9 seconds remaining in the game to give the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory at seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
The Diplomats (1-1) tied the contest, 9-9, with 6:51 remaining in the fourth on a goal from senior midfielder Marissa McGarrey. Neither team scored over the next four minutes, with F&M controlling possession with 1:40 on the clock.
Sophomore defender
Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) forced a turnover behind the goal to give the Generals (1-0) the ball with under a minute remaining. On the clear, senior midfielder
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) carried the ball across midfield and passed it to senior attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) down near the end line on the left side. Faria then sent the ball back to Schwab just outside the 12-meter arc.
With just one defender in front of her and the clock ticking under 15 seconds remaining, Schwab faked right and then cut to the cage on the left side. Approaching the goal, she fired the ball into the top-right corner of the net to give the Generals a 10-9 advantage with 11.9 seconds remaining in the game.
F&M won the ensuing draw control, but did not get a shot off in the final seconds, as the Blue and White held on for the win.
Sophomore attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) led the team with three goals and one assist. Faria added two goals and one assist, while Schwab finished with two goals. Edmondson and sophomore midfielders
Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and
Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) each had one goal. It marked the first collegiate goal for Timoney.
Doyle had a team-high three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior defender
Caroline Hall (Henrico, Va./Collegiate School) also added three caused turnovers. Sophomore defender
Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) totaled five draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played all 60 minutes, making seven saves. Senior goalkeeper Emily Kitchin totaled 11 saves, while playing the entire contest.
McGarrey registered a team-high four goals for F&M, while senior midfielder Maisie O'Shea finished two goals.
The Generals had a slight edge in shots, 31-25, and draw controls, 11-10, while the Diplomats led in ground balls, 21-17.
