YORK, Pa. – Graduate attackman Gunnar Reynolds scored unassisted with 51 seconds remaining to lift the fifth-ranked York men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday at Kinsley Stadium.
Reynolds' game-winner gave the Spartans (1-0) their first lead since the opening quarter. Senior attackman Eric Ranck scored just 42 seconds into the game to give York the early advantage.
W&L (0-2) responded by scoring three straight to assume a 3-1 advantage with 11:39 left in the second quarter. Sophomore attackman
Michael Ott (Savannah, Ga. / St. John's Prep (Mass.)) got the flurry started with an unassisted tally at the 6:18 mark of the first quarter. Ott then fed sophomore midfielder
Leif Smith (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) for a goal at the 5:41 mark, and senior midfielder
Teddy Bentley (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) made it 3-1 with an unassisted score at the 11:39 mark of the second quarter.
York first-year attackman Ben Mayer scored a pair of unassisted goals to pull the Spartans even (3-3) with 5:56 left in the half, but senior attackman
Spencer Kriss (Versailles, Ky. / Lexington Catholic) gave the Generals a 4-3 halftime lead when he scored off an assist by Ott with three seconds left in the second quarter.
Junior midfielder
Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) stretched the lead to 5-3 when he found the net just 27 seconds into the third quarter and each team added a goal over the next six minutes and change to make it a 6-4 W&L lead with 8:17 left in the penultimate quarter.
Reynolds scored two goals just 2:08 apart to knot the game at 6-6 with 5:04 left in the third quarter, but W&L first-year attackman
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) notched a tally with six seconds left in the third period to give W&L a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Spartans squeezed off 12 shots in the fourth quarter and pulled even at the 5:58 mark on a goal by senior midfielder Eben Ordakowski.
York pressured the Generals' clears from that point, forcing four W&L turnovers on clears in the final 4:57 of the game. Reynolds took advantage after the fourth General turnover, giving the Spartans their first lead since early in the first quarter.
For the game, York held advantages of 50-23 in shots, 34-22 in ground balls and 14-4 on faceoffs. The Generals were able to remain atop the scoreboard for much of the game due to the play of senior goalkeeper
Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison), who totaled a career-high 20 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Ott finished with one goal and two assists, with six others scoring one goal apiece. Junior long-stick midfielder
Boots Lackey (Alexandria, Va. / The Heights School) led the Generals' defensive effort with three caused turnovers.
Mayer led the Spartans with two goals and four assists. Reynolds added three goals and senior goalkeeper Jack Michael registered nine saves in goal.
Washington and Lee is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Washington College for a 1:00 pm contest.
