BREVARD, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team scored eight runs in the top of the eighth to erase an eight-run deficit, but fell by a score of 11-10 to Brevard on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by a 10-2 score entering the eighth inning, Brevard (5-1) retired the first two hitters before senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) kept the inning going with an infield single. After an error and hit by pitch loaded the bases, sophomore designated hitter
Julian Domenech (New York, N.Y. / Hunter College) singled to center to bring in two runs. Another hit batter preceded sophomore shortstop
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) reaching on an error to bring in the Generals' (3-1) fifth run.
Junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) then reached on an infield single to shortstop, cutting the W&L deficit to four runs. Junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison), who led off the inning, proceeded to deliver the big blow in the inning with a game-tying grand slam to center field.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Tornados got runners to first and second with two outs and scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run after two wild pitches plated junior right fielder Zach Allison.
The Tornados got on the board first with a five-run second inning. First-year first baseman Cale Oehler opened the scoring with an RBI double, before a W&L error three batters later allowed two more runs to score. Allison then doubled to center to bring in a run, followed by an RBI single to right by junior second baseman Blake Burchett.
The Generals got their first run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe), but Brevard answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a single from Allison. After Brevard added a run in the bottom of the fifth, Kuehner drove in another tally for the Generals on a sixth-inning single.
Brevard extended its lead to 8-2 with a three-run sixth inning to lead up to the late-inning dramatics.
Perkins' four RBI led the W&L offense, while Wickman and junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) both had two hits and combined for three runs scored. Kuehner finished the game going 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored.
First-year righty
Jack Cope (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon School) started and allowed five earned runs on three hits over the first 1.2 innings. First-year right-hander
Andrew Flood (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset Secondary School) came in for one out, before junior righty
Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School) surrendered five runs (three earned) across the next four innings. First-year righty
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) (0-1) was the losing pitcher as he allowed one earned run in 0.2 innings.
Allison and Burchett led the Brevard offense with three hits each, with Allison scoring three times and driving in two and Burchett scoring once and driving in one run. Oehler went 1-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore left fielder Logan Clark finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs.
Junior right-hander Nathan Sanders pitched the first five innings and sophomore lefty Cesar Rodriguez tossed two innings, as the pair combined to allow two runs (one earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts. The Generals tagged first-year righty Aiden Petty for eight runs (none earned) in 0.2 innings, before sophomore righty Cameron Cook (1-0) covered the final 1.1 innings to earn the win.
The Generals and Tornados will meet in game two of their three-game series on Sunday with a 1:00 pm first pitch.
