Volleyball Sweeps Lynchburg, Advances to ODAC Semifinal Contest

LEXINGTON, Va. - The third-seeded Washington and Lee University volleyball team downed the sixth-seeded University of Lynchburg in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals match on Wednesday evening.

The Generals (19-10) took three straight sets over the Hornets (15-12) for the second time this season (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) to advance into the semifinal round of the tournament.

The Blue and White took a commanding lead after posting a pair of double-digit wins in opening sets that split four ties on the scoreboard.

The visitors battled through the third set and had the momentum swing their way early on. In an effort to extend their season, LYN rattled off six of the seven initial points and looked to build some momentum but committed five consecutive attack errors to even the contest up at 6-6.

The two teams would trade rallies and WLU would go ahead for the first time in the set 10-9 at the end of a 3-0 run. An Abbi Leeper kill for the Hornets broke up the 6-1 run and four-straight LYN tallies put the sixth seed back on top 14-13.

W&L found themselves in a 21-17 deficit and the match looked to be extending into a fourth set.

Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) kicked off the match's decisive 8-2 run with a kill, set by Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake). An attack error committed by the Hornets brought W&L back within one, 21-20 to force the visitors to call a timeout. LYN tallied two consecutive points for the 23-20 lead but the Generals rallied five straight to take the final set.

The first and second set split four total tied scores but the final set saw eight tie scores and five lead changes.

Bree Spainhour led all players with 14 kills for the Hornets. On the other side of the net, Heifner and Avery Myers (New York, N.Y. / Poly Prep Country Day School) led the offense with 11 and nine kills, respectively.

Webb Tallied 24 assists and Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill. / Benet Academy) dug out 16 attacks. Heifner added 15 digs on the night.

The two teams split ten blocks but W&L had an 11-4 advantage from the service line.

Up next, the Generals will travel to #2 Averett University. AU defeated #7 Eastern Mennonite in the quarterfinals 3-1.

The Generals faced the Cougars on October 4 and fell in five sets. The loss broke a 33-game regular season conference winning-streak for the Blue and White. The two teams were tied for the #2 position in the post-season tournament but the decision in Danville gave AU the head-to-head advantage that broke the tie, and ensured home-court advantage for the league newcomers.

On the other side of the bracket, #8 Roanoke upset #1 Virginia Wesleyan and will travel to #4 Randolph-Macon for the second round. R-MC beat #5 Bridgewater in a 3-0 sweep.

The semifinals will take place at the higher-seeded competitor on Friday, November 4. Once a start time is confirmed, information will be posted on www.generalssports.com and www.odacathletics.com
