Volleyball falls at Averett 3-1 in ODAC Semifinals

DANVILLE, Va. - The Washington and Lee University volleyball season concluded in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinal matchup at Averett on Friday night.

The #3 Generals (19-11) took the opening series handedly 25-13, but the #2 Cougars (20-10) went on to win the next three sets to advance to the championship game.  AU marched to the finals in the first year of Averett's league membership after making the move from the USA-South Athletic Conference this summer.

W&L hit a match-best 0.261 to open up the night with ten kills to just four errors and took advantage of several AU miscues for the dominant win. The squad looked to be on the verge of avenging the five-set loss in Danville a month ago, the day that ended a 33-game regular season winning streak against ODAC schools.

Unfortunately, Averett bounced back and took sets two, three and four at 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.

With just three tied scores and one lead change early in the second set, AU never lost control and was able to tally the equalizer on the scoreboard.

The third set was a bit more competitive with six lead changes throughout the rallies. Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) set up an Avery Myers (New York, N.T. / Poly Prep Country Day School) attack and kill to notch a 17-17 equalizer. Then, the hosts pulled away as they doubled-up the lead on the Blue and White the next six points 4-2 then concluded the set with four consecutive points to earn a 2-1 set advantage.

What proved to be the final set favored all the momentum with the Cougars as the crowd shifted in the stands. The two teams were tied at 2-2 but from there, the highest remaining seed took the match the rest of the way.

The Blue and White trailed 21-14 but battled back with a pair of three-point rallies to come within three, 23-20. The visitors ran out of opportunities to close the gap after Emma Nash's kill tallied the match point 25-21.

The second seed dominated at the net with a 16-8 advantage in blocks.

Riley Debiec (Potomac, Md. / Bishop O'Connell) led the Generals attack with 13 kills, Heifner added 12. Seniors Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) tallied six blocks and Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill. / Benet Academy) dug out 20 attempts. Classmate Ashley Webb (Thousand Oakes, Calif. / Westlake) recorded 31 assists.

Averett, the highest-remaining seed will host #4 Randolph-Macon in their first ODAC Championship appearance on Sunday.

Awards for All-Conference and all-tournament will be announced at the conclusion of the contest followed by state, regional and national honors later in the year.

The 2023 competition slate for the Generals volleyball squad will be announced this coming summer.
