Women's XC Takes Third in Regional Championships, Todd Finishes Fourth Overall

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No. 26 Washington and Lee University women's cross country team placed third at the 2022 NCAA South Regional Championships hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday morning. 

Carolyn Todd (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/ Greely) headlined the Generals' squad with a fourth place finish and was the first of six women to dawn Blue and White and earn All-Region honors on the Lee Hall Mansion championship course. 

Todd's time of 22:56.3 led the Generals with sophomore Kristen Clodgo (Raleigh, N.C./ Sanderson) finishing behind her in the 17th slot. With Todd's top-5 finish, she becomes a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier and will compete next weekend in Michigan.

Sophia Breschi (Red Lion, Pa. / Homeschool), Elise Molinaro (East Stroudsburg, Pa./ East Stroudsburg), Claire Hamlet (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood), and Emma Mitchell (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherines) all finished in the top-35 to be named earn all-region honors as well.

Parker Hawk rounded out the scoring for the W&L squad with a 47 place finish out of the 176 women to compete in the 6k event. 

Annika Urban from No. 30 Emory won the race with a time of 22:29.3. Pfeiffer's Madison Lowery and Lynchburg's Sarah James rounded out the top three in front of Todd's finish. No. 16 Lynchburg was crowned the region champs and earned the South's automatic team qualifier for the NCAA Championships with 30 points. 

If Emory earns an at-large bid for the championship meet, Clodgo will join Todd in Michigan as she would be one of the top-7 runners from the region to not advance with a team qualification. The squad will await the complete field for the NCAA National Championships to be announced on Sunday. If the team earns an at large big, the team will compete in East Lansing, Michigan, next weekend.
