NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team came away with its second draw of the week on Saturday night, a scoreless affair at No. 24 Christopher Newport.
With the draw, the Generals move to 8-1-3 overall, but extend their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games. This also marked the final nonconference game of the regular season for the Generals. The Captains move to 8-2-1 overall with the draw.
The Generals finished the contest with one shot on goal, coming off the foot of sophomore
Lucas Pleasants (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) in the 39th minute. Late In the second half, sophomore
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) created a chance for himself when he knifed through the defense. Agbeyegbe spun through a pair of defenders and made a move past another, but he was unable to get a shot off.
W&L first-year keeper
Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) (8-0-3) made two saves in the game to keep the Captains off the board, both coming in the first half. Joseph's second save of the game came in the 37th minute off a CNU free kick. Ryan Machado-Jones took the chance from about 25 yards out and tried to curl the ball inside the left post, but Joseph dove to his right and punched the ball out of the box and away from further danger.
Beyond the keepers' efforts to keep the opposition off the board, the defenses combined to block six shots, four by the Captains and two by the Generals.
Senior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) took a team-high two shots on the night, while eight other Generals finished with one shot each. Joseph's two saves were enough to give him his fourth clean sheet of the season, lowering his goals-against average for the year to 0.76 across 951:16.
Matt Liss and Elton Quintanilla matched Bass with two shots each to lead the Captains' offense, with Quintanilla putting one of his two attempts on target. CNU goalkeeper Ethan Larson (8-2-1) finished with one save in his 90 minutes of play.
W&L finished the game with a 10-8 advantage in shots after outshooting CNU, 6-3, in the second half. The Captains, however, earned three corner kicks in each half and conceded just one.
The Generals will be back in ODAC action for the rest of the regular season, and will return to play on Wednesday at home with a 7:00 pm kick-off against Virginia Wesleyan.
