Agbeyegbe scores in 88th minute, No. 9 W&L draws at No. 19 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A goal from sophomore midfielder Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) in the 88th minute equalized, as the No. 9 Washington and Lee men's soccer team left Lynchburg with a 1-1 draw against the Hornets on Wednesday evening.

With the Generals (8-1-2, 4-0-1 ODAC) trailing by a goal and the clock having just ticked under three minutes left to play, W&L earned a throw-in deep in Lynchburg (6-0-5, 3-0-1 ODAC) territory on the right side. Senior defender Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) took the throw and launched the ball into the center of the box. His throw was flicked on by senior forward Patrick Rooney's (Littleton, Colo. / Mullen) head and right to the foot of Agbeyegbe on the left post, who finished the chance to tie things up.

The Hornets took an initial 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute on a goal by Luke Mega. With the ball bouncing loose around midfield, Brennan Lagana received a pass from Sebastian Quiroz-Gut, and he one-touched it up the left sideline for Mega. Mega needed three touches to make it into the 18 and close to the goal line, before he found the right angle between him and W&L first-year keeper Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) for the score.

The result gives W&L its 10th straight game without a loss, marking the fourth consecutive traditional fall season that the Generals have put together an undefeated streak of at least 10 games.

Joseph made a pair of saves across the 90 minutes of play, with one in each half. His first came in the 45th minute on a shot by Carson Boyd, followed by another stop in the 47th minute on an attempt by Mega.

The W&L offense was relentless throughout, and it forced Lynchburg keeper Justin Ennis to make six saves in the first half, in addition to a team save in the 25th minute. Ennis made another pair of saves in the second half to finish the contest with eight.

Agbeyegbe, who is now tied for the second-most goals in the ODAC this season, scored his eighth of the year, while Rooney and Colby racked up their fourth and second assists of the season, respectively. First-year midfielder Matteo Adler (Cobham, England / ACS Cobham International) took a game-high four shots to lead a group of nine Generals to attempt at least one shot on the night.

Mega finished with two shots for the Lynchburg offense in scoring his ODAC-high 10th goal of the year, and he was the only Hornet to attempt multiple times. Both of Mega's shots finished on goal, while Boyd tallied the third Lynchburg shot on goal.

Shots favored W&L by a 20-6 margin, which was split, 10-3, in both halves. The Blue and White also earned six corner kicks, three in each half, to one for the Hornets.

The Generals will step out of conference play for the final time in their next contest, traveling to face No. 24 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
