No. 18 Field Hockey Takes Down No. 14 Shenandoah, 5-2

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 18 Washington and Lee University field hockey team upset No. 14 Shenandoah University 5-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.

The NCAA top-20 contest featured a 2-2 tie at halftime but the Generals (15-2, 6-1 ODAC) tallied three goals in the second half to secure a victory over the Hornets (13-2, 6-1).

The first 14 minutes of the contest were scoreless until Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) connected with Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood) on a penalty corner. Muneses' was left unattended on the left edge of the scoring circle and her shot gave WLU a 1-0 lead with 15 second on the clock.

The Hornets dominated the second quarter and put up a pair of goals to take the advantage from Washington and Lee. Claudia Lenahan set up Mairead Mckibbin, who is the third leading scorer in Division III, in identical fashion at the 19:23 and 23:43 marks to take a 2-1 lead. Mckibbin posted up on the left side to redirect Lenahan's cross into the goal.

First-Year Betty Boatwright (Washington, D.C./ Georgetown Visitation) tied the game up with an unassisted tally just before the break. The midfielder cleaned up a rebounded save and snuck the ball behind the SU goalkeeper after Taylor Swann made an initial stop of a Muneses' shot with her pad.

Boatwright tallied another one six minutes into the second half to put W&L up 3-2. Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) carried the ball through the midfield and set up the game-winner. With that assist, Tobeason now has 11 on the year, tied for a program best and matched Sallie Armstrong's '10 2006 season atop the record book.

Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee) added two more insurance goals at 43:05, an unassisted tally, and again at 50:28 from Muneses.

Tobeason took five shots throughout the contest and put two of those on goal. Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy), Parks and Muneses each knocked on the Hornets' door three times to keep the pressure on Shenandoah and the ball in the scoring circle.

Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) played the entire 60 minutes in the cage and made five stops to keep W&L ahead of SU in the second half.

Shenandoah had a slight 4-3 edge in penalty corners but all four came in the second quarter along with six of the Hornets' 11 shots.

The Blue and White were able to free up their sticks on the offensive end 17 times and put nine of those shots on frame. Swann made four stops for SU.

Washington and Lee will wrap up the regular season with an ODAC contest at Bridgewater College on Saturday, October 29, at 1 p.m. The team will then await official tournament seeding to be announced on Saturday night by the league office.
