Field Hockey Secures Home-Turf Advantage With 3-0 Win at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 18 Washington and Lee field hockey team wrapped up regular season play with a 3-0 win at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (14-2, 7-1 ODAC) shutout the Eagles (6-9, 3-5) to claim the top-seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference 2022 Field Hockey Tournament pairings as announced on Saturday.

Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee) scored what proved to be the game winner, 21 minutes into the contest. Parks cleaned up a Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) rebounded shot. Tysinger's attempt hit the post and Parks was set on the far side of the goal and tapped it past the 'keeper.

The Blue and White peppered shots on the cage five minutes later. Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) the firstattempt on frame but Madalyn Miller stopped the initial effort. Betty Boatwright collected the loose ball and put it back into play toward the center of the scoring circle for Tysinger to redirect the feed across the goal line.

Boatwright then scored the final goal of the day five minutes into the second half on a fast break opportunity.

WLU outshot Bridgewater 15-2 and put 11 of those attempts on target to keep the Eagles' goalkeepers active. Miller and Harley Hoffman combined for eight saves.

Fitzgerald took a game-high four shots, all of which were on goal with Boatwright, Parks and Tysinger all adding three scoring opportunities each.

Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) spent all 60 minutes in the cage for the Blue and White and only had to make one stop. Jenny Lerner recorded a defensive save just 55 seconds into the contest, making a stop on the back line to prevent Carynn Klingler's shot from crossing into the goal.

W&L owned a 6-2 penalty corner advantage.

The Generals claimed the top seed in the 2022 ODAC Field Hockey Tournament following today's win despite a three-way stalemate at the top with Lynchburg (also receiving votes) and No. 14 Shenandoah. Each team has one conference loss on their resume, all against each other, but W&L earned the top spot in the bracket ensuring a home-turf advantage throughout the week.

The Blue and White earned a first-round bye with a pair of quarterfinal games slated for Tuesday, November 1. Washington and Lee will then host the winner of the No. 5 Bridgewater at No. 4 Roanoke quarterfinal contest in a Thursday night semi-final matchup.
