Volleyball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan in Four at Home

LEXINGTON , Va. - The Washington and Lee University volleyball team fell to Virginia Wesleyan in four sets on Wednesday night's Old Dominion Athletic Conference match.

The Generals (14-9, 9-2 ODAC) took the opener 25-23 before the Marlins (19-5, 10-1) stormed back to take the next three sets: 25-23, 25-22, and 25-15.

The Blue and White committed just five errors to 11 kills in the opening stanza and took advantage of VWU's nine errors following the long bus ride to Lexington.
The home team came out on top 25-23, after five lead changes and eight tied scores in the set.

After the switch, the second had the same outcome 25-23 but the scoreboard favored the visitors to tie the contest up 1-1. Ultimately the victors were more efficient during the attack with a success rate of .167 percent compared to .098 percent for the Generals.

The next set was back-and-forth with a tied game on nine occasions and seven lead changes. VWU took the lead with a 6-point run after tying the contest up 16-16. Three straight kills and a service ace gave the visiting team a cushion that proved necessary when two consecutive kills from sophomore Avery Myers (New York, N.Y. / Poly Prep Country Day School) brought W&L within one, 23-22.

Jenna Waters, a standout for the Marlins tonight, earned the set-point off a service ace to switch the benches with a 2-1 lead in favor of the visiting team. Virginia Wesleyan seemed to have knocked off the rust from the trip across the state.

VWU took the final set 25-15 and earned the program's first win over WLU since the 2015 ODAC Tournament. With tonight's victory, Va.Wes. remains atop the conference standings through 11 ODAC matches.

The Blue and White were led by Sydney Heifner's (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) match-high 16 kills and Ashley Webb's (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) 39 set assists.

Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill. / Benet Academy) matched Heifner's tally defensively with a match-best 16 digs. Sophomores Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and Maddie Weller (West Chester, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) added 15 and 12 digs, respectively.

Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) stuffed five attacks at the net and notched two solo blocks. First-year Riley Debeic (Potomac, Md. / Bishop O' Connell) recorded 10.5 points, she has reached double-digit marks on five occasions in her rookie campaign.

The Generals will host the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, October 22 at noon. The team will honor the program's three seniors after the non-conference matchup in Holekamp Gym.
