Volleyball Earns Two Wins at Stevenson Tri-Match

W&L Defeats Scranton 3-2 and Stevenson 3-1 in non-conference play

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Washington and Lee University volleyball squad played a pair of games on Saturday against the University of Scranton and Stevenson University in non-conference play and returned to Lexington with a pair of wins.

The Blue and White have a limited history with the two programs, today's matchup with Scranton marked just the third meeting and first since 1990.

Stevenson and Washington and Lee have squared off three times prior to today, the last contest was in 2018.

GAME ONE

The Generals (13-8) defeated Scranton (16-9) in game one, 19-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11. The teams battled through a five set series and alternated wins through the first four before the Generals took the match 15-11 in the decisive set.

Washington and Lee bounced back after a sluggish first set of the morning and hit .350 in the second to take a dominant 25-15 score and set the tone for the next three sets. After the opener, W&L limited their errors in their winning sets and committed three errors in the fourth set and just one in the last.

In set three, the most competitive duel all day, the Blue and White went on a five-point streak in the middle of the set and earned a 15-11 advantage. WLU extended the lead to as many as six points but Scranton battled back with a  10-2 run. The two teams alternated the last six points and the Royals took a 25-23 win.

Trailing the match 2-1, McKenna Cook (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty) stepped up to the service line with an 11-11 score in the fourth series. The Blue and White scored 10 straight points to push the match to five with a 25-20 victory.

A six point rally that initiated the bench switch at 9-3 and a .323 attacking percentage gave W&L the non-conference win 15-11.

Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth), Avery Myers (New York, N.Y. / Poly Prep Country Day School) and Lillie Holcomb (Greensboro, N.C. / Western Guilford) all recorded double-digit kills. The defense was led by Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill. / Benet Academy) with 24 and 22 digs, respectively. Both Cook and Heifner added 16 digs each. Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) was a force at the net with three blocks, one solo and two block assists.

GAME TWO

In the last event of the tri-match, the Blue and White (14-8) defeated the hosts, Stevenson (22-3) in the 4 p.m. slot, 25-17, 25-13, 20-25, 25-13.

Riding momentum from the previous win, WLU doubled up on the Mustangs 14-7 and held the SU at an arms length the rest of the way to a 25-17 win. W&L racked up 12 kills and benefited from six Stevenson errors and a .258 to .097 attack percentage advantage.

Half of the Blue and White's 12 service aces came in the second set, Heifner tallied four in an eight point run for the Generals and Buchholz added three in the ensuing 7-point run. The outstanding service game, combined with eight errors on SU's side gave the visitors a 25-13 win and two set advantage going into the third series.

Washington and Lee struggled to place their attacks, committed 10 errors and hit -0.026 in the third. Despite the struggles, the Generals kept the contest competitive but fell 20-25.

The Blue and White strung together their best series of the day with 15 kills on 27 attempts to just two errors for a .481 attack percentage for a 25-13 win to take the match 3-1 over Stevenson.

Heifner added 14 kills to her season count. Riley Debiec (Potomac, Md. / Bishop O'Connell) and Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) each added three service aces with Gard notching a pair of her own.

McSwain closed out the day with four more block assists on the teams' six. In match two, Cook and Gard tacked on 15 and 12 digs, respectively.
