LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team closed the second half on a 24-14 run, but top-ranked Randolph-Macon held on for a 77-72 victory on Saturday at Holekamp Gym.
The Yellow Jackets (17-1, 9-0 ODAC) made a layup with 7:44 left in the final period to go in front, 63-48. The Generals (7-9, 5-5 ODAC) answered with a 7-2 spurt, capped on a three-pointer by senior guard
Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), to trim the lead to 65-55 with 6:09 left in the contest.
With 5:24 left in the game, the margin was back to 12 following a layup by senior guard Buzz Anthony, but back-to-back triples by junior guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) and sophomore forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) cut the deficit to six (67-61) with 3:56 on the clock.
The advantage was still six, 71-65, after a layup by senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) with 1:47 remaining in the game, but six straight points over the next minute of game action stretched the R-MC lead to 77-65 with 44 ticks on the clock. Lamendola responded with a three-pointer from the corner and then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and dropped in a layup to pull the Blue and White to within seven (77-70) with 26 seconds remaining.
The Yellow Jackets missed the front end of a one-and-one, and junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) answered with a layup with seven seconds to go, but the Generals just ran out of time with R-MC holding on for the five-point win.
DiSibio led W&L with 22 points on 8-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-6 from long range. Lamendola totaled 16 points, four rebounds and two steals, while d'Entremont had 11 points and five rebounds. Wise finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists. With his two steals, Lamendola moved into a tie for ninth on the program's career steals list with 131.
Anthony totaled 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while junior forward Miles Mallory tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
Randolph-Macon led in second-chance points, 12-2, and had a six-rebound advantage (35-29) on the glass. Each team shot 49 percent from the field, while the Blue and White made 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) from beyond the arc compared to 29.2 percent (7-of-24) for the Yellow Jackets.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, playing at Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
