LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) made four free throws with 0.6 seconds left in the game to give the Washington and Lee men's basketball team a 76-72 victory over Ferrum on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym.
The Generals (7-8, 5-4 ODAC) trailed by five (72-67) with 1:32 remaining in the contest after two free throws by senior guard James Smith, Jr. Senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) missed a layup on the ensuing possession but corralled his own rebound. He passed to sophomore forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) for a triple in front of his own bench, which he buried, to pull the Blue and White to within two (72-70) with 1:21 on the clock.
On the Panthers' (5-12, 0-8 ODAC) trip down the court, junior guard Jamar Butler missed a point-blank layup with 50 ticks remaining, and then d'Entremont was fouled attempting a layup. He sunk both from the line with 41 seconds left to even the score at 72-72, and junior guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) forced a turnover on the other end to give W&L the final possession.
Following a timeout with 18 seconds left, the Generals passed the ball in to Lamendola in the back court. He walked the ball across the timeline and with six seconds left he drove to the hoop.
When Lamendola reached the free throw line, he passed the ball out to the right wing to senior guard
Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep). Panchal swung it to the top of the key to d'Entremont, and when d'Entremont started to drive to his left he was fouled by Smith Jr., sending d'Entremont to the line for two.
Arguing the call from the bench, the Ferrum head coach was issued two technical fouls, which ballooned d'Entremont's free throw attempts from two to six. He made four of the six shots from the line to give the Blue and White the four-point victory.
Junior guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the team with a season-best 19 points and seven rebounds, and d'Entremont finished with 15 points and six boards. DiSibio chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, while Lamendola had eight points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Sophomore guard Bryce Hall totaled a game-high 21 points on 7-of-9 from the floor for the Panthers. Junior guard Darius Kemp added 19 points and five rebounds, but also had eight turnovers.
The Generals shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from long range, while Ferrum hit just 7-of-18 (38.9 percent). The Panthers did outscore W&L, 38-24, in the paint. The Blue and White tallied a season-high 15 steals.
The Generals next host top-ranked Randolph-Macon on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
