Women's Basketball wins fifth straight, 69-60, at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team continued its hot streak with its second win in as many nights and fifth straight overall in a 69-60 road win at Bridgewater on Thursday.

The Generals improve to 10-3 overall and remain undefeated in ODAC play at 7-0 with the win, while the Eagles fall to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in conference with the loss.

The Eagles opened up a six-point lead through the first five minutes of the game, but the Generals countered by scoring the last 11 points of the quarter, with sophomore forward Emma Robertson (Saint George, S.C./Pinewood Prep) capping off the overall 13-0 run with a layup to begin the second quarter. Bridgewater got back within five points at the 5:37 mark, but eight straight points from W&L put the Generals back up by 13 points with 3:51 remaining in the half.

The W&L lead ballooned to 21 points (47-26) after a triple from sophomore guard Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) at the 7:50 mark of the third. The Eagles came alive, however, for a 15-3 run over the remainder of the period to reduce their deficit to nine points.

In the fourth, W&L limited the Eagles to no scoring runs larger than four straight points, as the Generals finished off the nine-point victory.

Senior guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) led the way for the Generals with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She connected on 3-of-6 long-range shots and also hit on 6-of-7 foul shots. Malik tallied 11 points and four rebounds, while senior guard Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) notched eight points on 4-of-5 shooting overall, to go along with eight boards.

Bridgewater sophomore forward Jaden Alsberry scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Alsberry made 5-of-10 field goal attempts and 7-of-8 free throws. Senior forward Erika Nettles tallied 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven boards, and sophomore guard Julia Williams finished with 10 points.

Both sides were close in field goal percentage for the game, with W&L at 37.5 (24-64) and Bridgewater at 35.0 (21-60). However, the Generals made eight three-point shots to just one for the Eagles on 12 attempts. W&L also held advantages in the game in points off turnovers (18-9) and bench points (20-11), while Bridgewater outscored W&L in the paint by a 32-22 margin.
