W&L upends Hollins, 87-65, to continue undefeated ODAC run

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team defeated Hollins on Saturday afternoon by a score of 87-65 to remain unbeaten in ODAC play.
 
The win marks the sixth consecutive victory for the Generals (11-3, 8-0 ODAC) and it is their 16th straight home win. Hollins falls to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC with the loss.
 
Hollins played a highly competitive first quarter and took a 27-24 lead into the second, courtesy of a late 6-0 run in the frame. However, the Generals bounced back by scoring the first 12 points of the second and opened the quarter on an overall 14-2 run to take a nine-point lead, before the lead grew to 10 points, 46-36, at halftime.
 
The Generals outscored Hollins by three points in the third quarter, aided by a 6-0 spurt midway through the period. Hollins kept within striking distance, however, as it trailed by nine points with 1:36 left in the third quarter. Senior guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) then hit a floater to kickstart a 20-7 run that saw W&L run its lead to 80-58.
 
Hollins had no answer in the final period, as first-year forward Cat Pettegrove (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) scored 10 of W&L's 19 fourth-quarter points en route to the 22-point victory.
 
Horn filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, two steals and two blocks to lead the Generals. Senior guard Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 4-for-8 on her three-point shots. Groninger added six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Pettegrove finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in just 12 minutes off the bench.
 
Sophomore guards Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Grace O'Connor (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) added nine points each on a combined 50-percent shooting from the floor (7-14).
 
Senior guard Kayla Surles totaled a game-high 22 points, and she was followed closely by sophomore guard Tia Tucker, who scored 21 points, brought in eight rebounds and came away with three steals. First-year forward Cabria Mutz added 11 points and three blocks.
 
The Generals finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (33-65) to Hollins' 36.4 percent (24-66), while the Generals made 10-of-29 three-point attempts to 4-of-16 from Hollins. W&L outscored Hollins in the paint (46-28), on the fast break (12-4) in bench points (39-0) and in second-chance points (14-12).
 
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Randolph-Macon in a 7:00 pm battle of undefeated ODAC teams.
