LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team overcame an early double-digit deficit to claim a 63-48 win over Randolph on Wednesday evening.
The win marks the Generals' (9-3) 15th consecutive win at home and they also improve to 6-0 in the ODAC, extending a program-record conference-best start. The WildCats fall to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in league play with the loss.
The Generals fell behind early in the contest as a 17-4 Randolph run into the second quarter had the WildCats ahead by a 23-10 count. W&L responded with a 12-2 run, led by six points from senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School), to cut the Randolph lead to three points.
Leading by one point entering the third quarter, the WildCats' largest lead in the second half reached five points after a trio of jumpers to put themselves up, 36-31, at the 7:25 mark. W&L then scored 18 straight points and logged an overall run of 24-2 which spanned to the eight-minute mark of the fourth quarter. During the run, senior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored a team-high seven points, while the Generals limited Randolph to just two made foul shots.
Sophomore guard Kylie Stark connected on a jumper with 7:55 remaining to end the run, but the WildCats were unable to overcome the 17-point advantage the Generals had built up.
Horn finished the contest with a team-high 15 points, and she added seven rebounds and five assists. On her third assist of the game, Horn became just the fourth player in program history to reach 300 career assists. Horn is now also just one of two players in program history to total at least 300 assists and 400 rebounds, joining Louisa Feve '06 (369 assists, 542 rebounds).
Groninger tallied 13 points in the win, followed by senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) who notched 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and seven rebounds. Junior forward
Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) and sophomore forward
Emma Robertson (Saint George, S.C./Pinewood Prep) each grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
For the WildCats, senior guard Cierra Cook and first-year guard Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson paced the offense with 16 points and 15 points, respectively, and they combined for nine rebounds and seven steals.
The Generals shot 36.8 percent (25-68) from the floor and held the WildCats to 29.2 percent (19-65) in what was W&L's third game of the season holding an opponent under 50 points. W&L also won the rebounding battle, 53-40, and it is the first time since 2007 that the Generals have pulled down 50 or more rebounds in three straight games.
W&L will return to the court on Thursday for a 7:00 pm road game at Bridgewater.
