LEXINGTON, Va. — Guilford opened the second half on an 18-2 run to upend the Washington and Lee men's basketball team, 77-65, on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym.
The Generals (6-7, 4-3) closed the opening half with a deep three-pointer by junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) to trim their deficit to 43-38, but the Quakers (9-3, 5-0 ODAC) took control of the contest in the second.
Over the first 12 minutes of the second stanza, Guilford scored 18 points, holding the Blue and White to just one bucket. During the span, the Quakers had six different players score, while W&L shot 1-of-13 from the floor with six turnovers.
Following the onslaught, the Generals found themselves in a 61-40 hole with just 8:37 left in the contest. W&L fought back over the final minutes, trimming nine points off the margin, but it was not enough, as the team fell by 12 points.
Sophomore forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) led the team with 16 points on 7-of-14 from the field. He also had eight rebounds. Senior forward
Gus Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) came off the bench for 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) totaled seven points, three rebounds, two blocks, two assists and one steal.
Senior forward Jaylen Gore led the Quakers with 18 points and five assists. Senior forward Liam Ward added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Generals shot 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the field, 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from beyond the arc and 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from the foul line. Guilford was 30-of-69 (43.5 percent) from the floor, 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from beyond the arc and 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.
The Quakers dominated on the glass, holding a 53-31 advantage. Guilford also had 17 offensive rebounds, compared to four for W&L. It led to a 16-2 edge in second-chance points for Guilford.
The Generals next play at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
