Wise Forces Overtime, but Generals Lose, 84-81, at Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Junior guard Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) drained two free throws with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Virginia Wesleyan came away with an 84-81 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Sunday at TowneBank Arena.

The Generals (6-8, 4-4 ODAC) trailed, 71-66, with 17 seconds left in the second half, and then senior guard Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) drained a three-pointer from the right corner, while being fouled, to pull the Blue and White to within two (71-69) with seven seconds on the clock. He made the ensuing free throw to trim the deficit to one, 71-70, and W&L immediately fouled to send the Marlins' (9-7, 5-2) first-year wing Anthony Jackson to the free throw line.

Jackson missed the first, but then sunk the second to give VWU a 72-70 lead with 6.2 seconds left in the period. The Generals passed the ball in to Wise, who brought the ball quickly across the timeline on the left side. With the clock winding down, he drove to the hoop and attempted a last-second layup. The shot rolled off the rim for a miss, but a blocking foul was called to send Wise to the line. He made both to even the score, 72-72, and force another five minutes of action.

Virginia Wesleyan maintained a lead for most of overtime, holding an 82-77 spread with 30 seconds left in the contest. Sophomore forward Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) converted a layup with 22 seconds on the clock to trim the deficit to 82-79, and then the Blue and White fouled Jackson.

Jackson once again split his free throws, and then another driving layup by DiSibio put the score at 83-81 with 11 seconds remaining in the game. W&L forced a turnover on the in-bounds pass, but DiSibio missed a three-pointer from the right wing with four seconds on the clock.

After another foul, VWU senior forward Tim Fisher made the first but missed the second. Wise grabbed the rebound and passed the ball up the floor to sophomore forward Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor). He then launched a last-second potentially game-tying 35-foot three-pointer, but it came up short, as the Marlins pulled out the three-point win.

DiSibio and d'Entremont each scored 16 points to lead the Generals. DiSibio added six rebounds, while d'Entremont had five. Senior guard Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) totaled 11 points and four assists, before fouling out in regulation.

Jackson led all players with 22 points on 7-of-10 from the field. Senior forward Kelvin Nicholson contributed 14 points and four rebounds, making seven of his nine shots from the floor.

The Blue and White shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field, compared to 40.0 percent (28-of-70) for the Marlins, but W&L turned the ball over 17 times with only 10 for VWU.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, hosting Ferrum at 7:00 pm.
