LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team used a 15-3 fourth-quarter run to secure its 14th consecutive home victory on Saturday by a score of 69-56 over Lynchburg.
The Generals improve to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the win, an all-time program best start in ODAC play for W&L. The Hornets fall to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the ODAC with the loss.
After Lynchburg sophomore guard Taylor Gantt dropped a triple to open the fourth-quarter scoring, cutting the W&L lead to 49-48, the Generals responded with their 15-3 stretch to open their advantage up to 13 points. During the run, sophomore guard
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) scored five points, including a three to cap the run, while senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) started the run with a jumper and scored four points.
A free throw from first-year guard Olivia Harris ended the run with 2:54 remaining in the game, as both teams traded five points each to close out the contest.
The Generals ended the opening frame by scoring eight straight points, as a pair of Diehl free throws were sandwiched between one three-pointer each from Malik and senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School). A 9-2 W&L run in the second ran the lead to 10 points, while another 6-0 stretch during the third helped the Generals stay out in front heading into the final quarter.
Horn led the way in the win with a team-high 14 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Her 15 boards bested her previous high of 11, and it is the first time any General has pulled down 15 or more rebounds since Diehl did so against Hollins on Feburary 5, 2020. Horn added four assists, four steals and a block to her line.
Malik finished with 12 points and junior forward
Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) contributed an 11-point, 10 rebound double-double. Diehl and senior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) each scored 10 and recorded two steals, while first-year forward
Cat Pettegrove (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) secured 10 boards in 10 minutes off the bench.
Harris and senior forward Erin Green paced the Lynchburg offense with 12 points each and a combined 11 rebounds, while senior guard Meredith Vetter tallied 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.
W&L held Lynchburg to just 29.9 percent (20-67) shooting from the floor and won the rebounding battle, 56-48, which led to a 16-6 edge in second-chance points. The Generals also outpaced the Hornets in points in the paint (38-24) and points off turnovers (15-5).
The Generals will return to action on Monday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm ODAC matchup.
