SALEM, Va. — Senior forward
Gus Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) tallied a career-high 22 points to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 77-57 victory over 15th-ranked Roanoke on Saturday at the Cregger Center.
The Generals (6-6, 4-2 ODAC) led 27-26 with 5:52 left in the first and then Wise drained a three-pointer followed by a triple by junior guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) to extend the margin to 33-26 with 5:19 remaining in the half.
After a layup by sophomore forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor), the Maroons (9-4, 1-3 ODAC) answered with one of their own, but then sophomore forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) scored five straight points to give the Blue and White a 40-28 lead with 3:30 to go in the stanza. Roanoke trimmed a few points off the margin over the next three minutes, with W&L holding a nine-point edge (45-36) at intermission.
The advantage was still nine, 55-46, with 12:42 remaining in the contest, but then back-to-back buckets by Wise and DiSibio pushed the lead to 59-46 with 11:28 on the clock. After a free throw by the Maroons, Wise converted an old-fashioned three-point play and d'Entremont canned a jumper to stretch the margin to 17 (64-17) with nine minutes to go in the contest.
A jumper by junior guard Kasey Draper trimmed the lead to 15, but three straight baskets by the Generals, capped on a fast-break layup by DiSibio, extended the gap to 70-49 with 6:22 left in the game, as the Blue and White cruised to the 20-point win.
Wise finished 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc to notch his game-high 22 points. He also needed only 21 minutes to reach the total. DiSibio recorded 19 points to go with five boards.
Lewis had nine points and six rebounds, and d'Entremont chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. Junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) finished with a team-best seven assists to go with four points and three rebounds.
The Generals shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the floor and 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from beyond the arc, while making all three of their free throws. Roanoke connected on just 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) from the field, 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from long range and 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from the foul line. W&L registered 10 steals to just three for the Maroons.
This marked the first win over a ranked opponent for the Generals since defeating sixth-ranked Catholic, 74-72, on November 24, 2015.
Junior guard Efosa U-Edosomwan and sophomore forward Justin Kuthan each scored 13 points to lead Roanoke. Draper added 11 points.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, hosting Guilford at 5:00 pm.
