Wielechowski powers W&L to 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) scored a pair of goals to lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday on the second and final day of the W&L Invitational.

The win marks the Generals' third win in as many games to open the 2021 campaign, while their unbeaten streak was extended to 14 games (13-0-1). The Titans fell to 1-2 overall on the season with the loss.

Wielechowski put W&L on the board in the 11th minute after receiving a long pass ahead from senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga). Hoeh had stolen the ball in the Generals' defensive third, made a run up the field and let her pass go just after midfield, as the ball came to Wielechowski's left foot just outside the 18. Wielechowski then finished with her right foot inside the left post.

Hoeh extended the W&L lead in the 43rd minute when she one-timed a right-footed shot from about 12 yards out into the back of the net following a short pass from the endline by first-year defender Ann Riley Huber (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal).

In the 79th minute, Wielechowski added her second goal of the game when she stole the ball from the opposing keeper at about the six-yard box, and finished with ease on the open net. The two-goal performance from the junior midfielder marked her second career multi-goal game.

Wielechowski finished the contest with a game-high five shots and she had two shots on goal. Hoeh's goal and assist went down as her second career game with both one goal and one assist, while Huber's assist was her first collegiate point.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (3-0) earned the win and made four saves to earn her 16th career shutout, tying Emily Barker '04 for the sixth most in program history. Coombs has not allowed a goal in 225:00 minutes of action this season, and she currently owns a consecutive shutout minutes streak of 280:24.

Illinois Wesleyan first-year midfielder Liza Matimore led the Titans' offense with four shots on the day and first-year midfielder Tegan Timerman came in next with two shot attempts. First-year goalkeeper Kayla Borg (1-2) covered all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.

The Generals outshot the Titans, 15-11, in the game, including 9-6 in the second half. Illinois Wesleyan earned five corner kicks and conceded four.

W&L will be back in action on Saturday when it faces St. Mary's (Md.) at 1:00 pm at the Salisbury Tournament.
