SALISBURY, Md. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team prevailed by a score of 2-0 over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon to kick-off the Salisbury Tournament.
The win improves the Generals' overall record to 4-0 this season, and they are now unbeaten in 15 straight games (14-0-1), tied for the fifth-longest span without a loss in program history. The Seahawks fall to 2-2 overall with the loss.
It didn't take long for the Generals to pull ahead, as sophomore defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) finished off a cross from short range at the left post in the eighth minute. Senior forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) sent in the cross from the right side after she received a pass up field from sophomore midfielder
Emma Mansfield (Washington, D.C./The Potomac School).
The game remained at a 1-0 score for most of the remainder of the game, but the Generals controlled the offensive chances throughout, as the team finished with a 20-4 advantage in total shots. W&L's second goal came with seven seconds left, when a cross from the left side was headed into the box by Leding. From there, junior midfielder
Annie Martin (Martinsville, W.Va./Martinsburg) raced in and put the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the season.
Leding's two assists tied a career high and it was the third time in her career she's assisted on two goals in a game. Leding, along with Grainger, senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) and junior midfielder
Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) each shot twice on the day. First-year defender
Ann Riley Huber (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) and junior forward
Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) led the offense with three shots each.
Senior goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (4-0) made one save in the game to notch her third shutout of the season. It was also the 17th shutout of her career, moving her past Emily Barker '04 for the sixth-most in program history. Coombs also extended her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 370:24 in the win.
For the Seahawks, sophomore midfielder Flor Katz-Starr registered the lone shot on goal, as she and four other players shot once each in the game. Junior goalkeeper Audra Haines (0-1) took the loss in net, allowing two goals in 90 minutes with a pair of saves.
The 20-4 shot advantage for W&L came after a 10-2 count in both halves. The Generals also earned seven corner kicks in the game, to just two for the Seahawks.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Sunday when they take on tournament host Salisbury at 2:00 pm.
