Generals prevail, 1-0, over Salisbury after late Hoeh goal

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) scored in the 83rd minute to propel the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.

Salisbury (2-2) lined up to take a corner kick in the 83rd minute of the scoreless contest, but the W&L (5-0) defense cleared the ball from danger. Junior forward Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) collected the loose ball and made a long run up field, before finding a wide open Hoeh behind the Salisbury defense. One-on-one with the Sea Gull keeper, Hoeh shot with her right foot and scored inside the left post.

The Sea Gulls had a chance to tie the game in the 88th minute when sophomore defender Lauren Spellman took a shot from distance that was heading for the top-right corner of the frame. However, W&L senior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) swatted the ball out of bounds to preserve the lead.

Hoeh's goal was her second of the young season, while Boussy notched her first assist of the year as the duo led the Generals to their 16th consecutive game without a loss (15-0-1), tied for the fourth longest streak in program history. Junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) led the W&L offense with a game-high seven shots.

Coombs (5-0) registered her fourth shutout of the season after she made four saves to earn the win. She has not allowed a goal in 405:00 this season, and she owns a consecutive shutout minutes streak of 460:24. Additionally, the Generals have held their opponents to no goals through five games this season, which is the longest streak for the program in 15 years.

Salisbury senior midfielder Ally Goetz led the Sea Gulls' offense with four shots on the day and she put two attempts on goal, but no other player registered multiple shots. Senior goalkeeper Emma Hill (2-2) took the loss in net after allowing one goal and making nine saves.

The Generals claimed the edge in total shots by an 18-7 margin, with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Despite a scoreless first half, W&L kept pressure on the Salisbury defense with nine total shots and six attempts on goal. There were nine corner kicks taken in the game, six by the Generals.

W&L will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Emory for a 1:00 pm contest.
