Two Goals Late in the Second Period Lift Generals Past Denison, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored twice in the final two minutes of the second quarter on its way to a 3-0 victory over Denison on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.

Through the first 28 minutes of the game neither team had scored, despite the Generals (2-0) holding a 15-1 advantage in shots at that point. With 1:41 left on the clock in the second, junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) dribbled the ball down the right side in the offensive zone.

Tobeason crossed into the circle and fired a shot toward the goal. It hit the pads of senior goalkeeper Maren Kraak, but still carried past the goalie and into the cage for the first score of the contest. It marked Tobeason's second goal of the year.

Just 58 seconds later, senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) carried the ball into the offensive zone on the right side. She cut toward the center of the circle, and as Kraak came off her line, Weise flicked the ball into the left side of the goal to push the Blue and White in front, 2-0.

The Generals final tally of the contest came 4:11 into the third. Junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) had the ball on the left side of the circle and struck a shot toward the cage. Her first attempt was blocked, but she stuffed her follow up past the keeper for the goal.

W&L led in shots, 31-4, in the contest and 12-4 in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played the full 60 minutes and made one save. She moved into sole possession of second on the team's career shutout list with 13. Ariyel Yavalar '19 holds the program record with 14.

Kraak played the first 30 minutes at goalkeeper and allowed two goals with seven saves. First-year Athena Joannou saw the final 30 minutes of action and made seven saves with one goal allowed.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host 14th-ranked Christopher Newport at 12:30 pm.
