LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior forward
Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) registered her second collegiate hat trick to go with one assist to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over 14th-ranked Christopher Newport on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
The Captains (1-3) scored the first goal of the contest just 1:42 after the opening whistle off the stick of junior forward Abby Asuncion. The Generals (3-0) tied the game six minutes later.
On a break, Weise crossed the logo and sent a long forwarding pass to junior forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School). Entering the circle at full sprint, Tobeason faked the goalkeeper to the right and then cut left, pushing the ball into the wide-open cage to tie the score, 1-1.
With just over 11 minutes left in the second, CNU controlled the ball in its defensive third, but an attempted pass up the field was intercepted by junior forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg). She then brought the ball into the circle and sent it to Weise on the left side. Weise took one quick touch and then beat the keeper inside the left post.
Asuncion tallied her second goal with 2:10 left in the period to knot the score, 2-2, at halftime. The Blue and White went back in front, 3-2, six minutes in the third. Weise had the ball on the right side of the circle and fired it toward the center. It deflected off a defender and snuck in the left post for her second goal of the contest.
With just under four minutes left in the third, the Generals were awarded a penalty corner. Junior forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) sent it to the top of the circle to junior forward
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation). Fitzgerald found Muneses on the left side, and she quickly shot the ball into the cage to give W&L a 4-2 lead.
Asuncion struck again with 13 seconds left in the third to pull the Captains within one, 4-3. Weise scored her third and final goal of the game with 12:10 left in the fourth. On a counterattack, Muneses carried the ball into the offensive zone. She sent a long pass into the circle, which brought the goalkeeper off her line. Tobeason one-touched a pass to Weise on the left side, and then Weise pushed it into the open cage to extend the W&L lead to 5-3.
CNU registered the final goal of the contest, Asuncion's fourth, with 11:24 left in the fourth, but the Blue and White defense held over the final minutes to preserve the upset victory.
The seven points for Weise are a career high and are tied for the fifth-most in a single game in program history. Tobeason and Muneses each had one goal and one assist.
Asuncion scored all four goals for the Captains on seven shots. Senior forward Mauri Ware and junior midfielder Marcella Sabbagh each had one assist.
Senior
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played all 60 minutes in goal, totaling six saves with four goals allowed. Junior goalkeeper Gabi Gray saw all 60 minutes of action for CNU, stopping four saves with five goals allowed.
CNU had a one-shot advantage in the contest, 18-17, and the Captains took eight corners to the Blue and White's six.
The Generals return to action on Friday, when they play at Dickinson at 4:00 pm
