W&L Field Hockey Blanks Kenyon, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team took 26 shots compared to just four for Kenyon, as the Generals won their season opener, 3-0, on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.

The Blue and White (1-0) scored its first goal 9:29 into the first period. Sophomore midfielder Paige Mammorella (Louisville, Ky./Manual) controlled the ball on the left side and sent a long pass into the center of the circle. Junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) corralled the ball and struck a shot past the goalkeeper to give W&L a 1-0 advantage.

The Generals pushed their margin to 2-0 with 4:14 left in the first half. A pass was sent from the right side on the end line toward the goal. The ball deflected off of junior goalkeeper Payton Doan's pads and just to her right. Junior forward Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) was waiting and stuffed the ball into the cage for her first tally of the season.

The final W&L goal came 41 seconds into the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Emma Gatrell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) had the ball on the left side in the circle and sent a pass through a defender to first-year forward Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) near the post. Ruffin then slipped the ball past the keeper for her first collegiate tally.

The Ladies (1-1) only had one true scoring opportunity coming with under a minute remaining in the contest. Off a penalty corner, Kenyon fired three shots, but the Generals' defense blocked one, and senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) stopped the other two.

Along with a 26-4 margin in shots, the Blue and White led in corners, 10-1. Amil played the full 60 minutes with three saves. She registered the 12th shutout of her career, moving into a tie for second on the W&L career list. Courtney Harrison '06 finished her career with 12. Ariyel Yavalar '19 holds the program record with 14.

Doan saw 45 minutes of action and allowed two goals with 10 saves. First-year Magan Lydon played the final 15 minutes, giving up one goal with one save.

The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they host Denison at 1:00 pm.
