W&L Volleyball Stifles Lynchburg, 3-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team recorded a season-high 13 blocks en route to a 3-1 victory at Lynchburg on Wednesday.
 
The Hornets (5-8, 3-3 ODAC) took the first set, 25-21. The two teams went back and forth in the second and were tied, 24-24, late in the stanza. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) pushed the Generals (13-3, 5-0 ODAC) in front, 25-24.
 
Following an attack error by W&L, first-year setter Mya Green of Lynchburg committed a service error to give the Blue and White another set point opportunity at 26-25. Senior outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) closed out the set (27-25) with a kill.
 
The Generals opened the third by scoring 10 of the first 13 points on its way to claiming the set, 25-17. W&L assumed another early lead in the fourth, 6-1, but Lynchburg fought back and eventually trimmed the deficit to two, 22-20. From there, each team recorded a kill to push the score to 23-21. The Blue and White finished off the match with back-to-back kills from Heifner and junior setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake).
 
Heifner led the team with 15 kills and added seven digs. Sokolow contributed 13 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Junior defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) notched a match-high 21 digs.
 
Webb did a little bit of everything with 40 assists, nine digs and four kills. Senior right side Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) registered eight kills and six blocks.
 
Senior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) recorded seven kills on a .375 hitting percentage and four blocks. Junior outside hitter Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) led the team with a career-best seven blocks. First-year setter Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) added 12 digs.
 
Junior outside hitter Josey Walton led Lynchburg with 15 kills, junior outside hitter Abbi Leeper tallied 14 kills and 11 digs and senior outside hitter Emma Drake notched 12 kills.
 
The Generals return to action on Saturday, hosting Shenandoah at 12:00 pm and Christopher Newport at 5:00 pm.
