Generals Upend No. 18 Centre, 4-1

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored the first three goal of the game en route to a 4-1 upset of 18th-ranked Centre on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (6-0) scored the first goal of the contest just 1:48 into the first. Just outside the circle, junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) pushed the ball ahead to senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School). Weise took one touch on the right side and fired a shot across the cage inside the left post for her seventh goal of the year.

W&L added to its lead three minutes into the second quarter. Junior forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) had two shots saved by junior goalkeeper Sienna Joseph with the ball popping free on the left side near the post. Junior forward Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) tipped the ball toward the open cage, and Fitzgerald came in and brushed it across the line for the goal.

Junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) extended the margin to 3-0 two minutes into the third when she deflected a pass from senior forward Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) into the cage for her fifth goal of the season.

The Colonels (6-2) scored their only goal with 4:22 remaining in the third on a penalty stroke. Senior midfielder Meredith Wickenheiser notched the tally for Centre.

The Generals registered their final goal in the fourth with 11:25 left in the contest. On a penalty corner, junior forward Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) inserted the ball to the top of the circle. Fitzgerald trapped the pass, and Muneses struck the ball inside the left post for her fifth score of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played the full 60 minutes, totaling eight saves with one goal allowed. Joseph started the contest for the Colonels and made five saves with two goals allowed in 30 minutes. First-year Carlie McKenry saw the final 30 minutes of action and stopped six shots with two goals allowed.

The Blue and White held a 21-12 advantage in shots and 5-2 in penalty corners. With her goal, Weise pushed her career total to 26, tying for seventh on the program's all-time list. Kendall Korte '08 finished her career with 26.

The victory marked the 13th straight at home for W&L, which ties the program record. The Generals last loss at home came on October 23, 2019. The Blue and White also won 13 straight home games across the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

The Generals open ODAC play on Friday at Ferrum at 7:30 pm.
