No. 16 W&L Field Hockey Handles Ferrum, 11-0

FERRUM, Va. — The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee field hockey team scored five goals in the first period en route to an 11-0 victory at Ferrum on Friday evening.

The Generals (7-0, 1-0 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest just 2:34 into the first. Junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) carried the ball into the circle on the left side and shot across the cage into the right corner. Junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) was waiting on the post and tipped it into the cage.

Muneses added her own goal just two minutes later. Junior forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) had the ball at the top of the circle and passed to Muneses on the left side. She took one touch and sent the ball inside the left post to extend the lead to 2-0.

Sophomore midfielder Paige Mammorella (Louisville, Ky./Manual) added the Blue and White's third goal of the opening period with six minutes left in the frame. She dribbled the ball in from the left side and then struck a shot across the cage for her first collegiate tally.

W&L's fourth goal of the first came with 1:06 on the clock. Fitzgerald knifed her way through the Panthers' (3-7, 0-1 ODAC) defense, and then abruptly stopped as she crossed into the circle, striking a long shot past the goalkeeper for the score.

The Blue and White's final goal of the opening quarter came with 21 seconds left in the stanza. Junior forward Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) controlled the ball on the right side and sent a pass across the circle to the left post. First-year forward Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) was there and redirected the ball in for the goal.

First-year forward Maddy Duggleby (Fayetteville, N.Y./Feyetteville-Manlius) scored her first two collegiate goals in the second to push the W&L lead to 7-0 at halftime. She tallied the first unassisted with 2:07 left in the second and then recorded the second on an assist from sophomore forward Allison Pitts (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) with 1:39 on the clock.

The Blue and White added four goals to its total over the final 30 minutes. Pitt and Parks each notched their first goals of the year, sophomore midfielder Claire Richey (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) scored her first collegiate goal and Ruffin added her second tally of the contest.

Senior Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and sophomore Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) split the goalkeeping duties for the Generals. Amil played the first 30 minutes and did not face a shot. Long saw the final 30 minutes of action and did not register a save.

Sophomore goalkeeper TJ Baker played all 60 minutes for the home team, allowing all 11 goals with 11 saves. The Generals outshot Ferrum, 27-1, and held a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The 11-0 victory is the largest for W&L since another 11-0 win against Sweet Briar on October 27, 2016.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
