Amil Sets W&L Career Shutouts Record; No. 14 Generals Top Roanoke, 4-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) set the Washington and Lee career shutouts record, as the 14th-ranked Generals defeated Roanoke, 4-0, on Tuesday at the W&L Turf Field.

The Blue and White (8-0, 2-0 ODAC) dominated the contest, leading in shots, 25-6. W&L scored just 35 seconds in to the game, when junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) carried into the circle on the left side, and struck a long shot past the keeper.

The Generals extended the lead to 2-0 five minutes later off a penalty corner. Senior defender Katherine Berman (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) controlled the ball on the right side and fired the ball toward the center of the circle. Sophomore midfielder Paige Mammorella (Louisville, Ky./Manual) deflected it into the right corner of the cage for her second goal of the year.

The Maroons (4-5, 0-2 ODAC) had three scoring chances in the second, but Amil registered three saves, her total for the night, in the period to give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead at intermission. The margin remained at 2-0 until 1:19 left in the third.

After a Roanoke foul, junior forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) brought the ball into the circle from the right side. She stopped as she reached the center and took a backhanded shot that sent the ball past the keeper for her third tally of the year.

W&L scored its final goal with 9:18 remaining in the fourth. Muneses passed the ball in from the right side, and senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) redirected it into the cage for her eighth goal of the season.

The shutout marked Amil's fourth of the season and her 15th of her career. She was previously tied with Ariyel Yavalar '19, who finished her four seasons with 14. Amil now has a 0.93 goals-against average on the season and an .844 save percentage.

Senior Hannah Roerden allowed all four goals for the Maroons in 50:42. She also made eight saves. Sophomore Madison Wingerter played the final 9:18 and registered five saves.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Bridgewater at 12:00 pm.
