FERRUM, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had three players total at least 10 kills in a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater in a neutral-site contest at Ferrum on Saturday.
Up 2-0 (25-19 and 25-18) heading into the third, the Generals (12-3, 4-0 ODAC) fell behind, 6-2, to the Eagles (4-6, 1-1 ODAC) early in the set. Trailing 11-8 later in the stanza, W&L won four straight points, capped on a combination block from senior middle blocker
Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) and junior setter
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake), to assume a 12-11 advantage.
The Blue and White extended its lead to 19-13 in the third, but Bridgewater trimmed the deficit to 22-17, and then won six straight rallies to take a 23-22 edge. The teams exchanged points over the next four rallies with the Eagles in front, 25-24, after a kill by sophomore middle hitter Lauren Nofsinger.
Senior outside hitter
Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) evened the set with a kill, and then a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) gave the Generals a match-point opportunity, 26-25. W&L closed out the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-0, on another combo block from Blain and Webb.
Heifner led the team with 16 kills and eight digs. Senior right side
Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) totaled 12 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Sokolow notched 10 kills on a .308 hitting percentage and had a team-best 15 digs.
Blain and Webb each had three blocks, while Webb added 39 assists and seven digs. Junior defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) contributed 11 digs, while first-year setter
Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) recorded 10 digs.
Nofsinger led Bridgewater with 11 kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Jessica Bissmeyer totaled a match-high 20 digs.
The Generals next compete on Wednesday at Lynchburg at 6:30 pm.
