Generals open ODAC slate with 1-1 draw against Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a hard-fought 110 minutes of play, the Washington and Lee women's soccer team tied with Roanoke, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon to open ODAC play.

With time ticking away and the Generals (5-1-1, 0-0-1 ODAC) ahead by a 1-0 score, Roanoke (6-1-1, 0-0-1 ODAC) senior defender Emma Woods crossed a corner kick to the back post where first-year midfielder Makayla Metzler headed in the equalizer with just over six seconds to play in regulation.

Over the two overtime periods, W&L outshot the Maroons, 4-0, but an extra 20 minutes of play yielded the conference-opening draw for both sides.

Despite the game being scoreless through the first 75 minutes of play, W&L controlled the pace of play and limited opportunities for the Maroons. With 14:36 remaining in regulation, first-year defender Ann Riley Huber (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) sent in a cross from the right side to the back post. First-year forward Sam Berish (Doylestown, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) was on the receiving end of the cross, and she headed the ball in for her second goal of the season.

Berish's goal came on one-of-two shots in the contest, while senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) led the offense with a game-high five shot attempts, including four shots on goal. Senior forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) and junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) came in next with four shots each, with a combined three attempts on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (5-1-1) played all 110 minutes in goal and made three saves. Roanoke junior keeper Carrington Lippi (6-1-1) played the entirety of the game as well and made nine stops.

Woods and sophomore forward MC Petrucelli each took two shots for the Maroons, with a combined three shots on goal.

W&L outshot Roanoke, 21-6, for the game, and held a 13-3 shot advantage after the first half. Six corner kicks were taken in the game, three by both teams.

The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 6:00 pm.
