LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) scored two goals in the second period to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Catholic on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
 
The Cardinals (2-6) held a 2-1 lead entering the second quarter. Muneses tied the game with 9:09 left in the period, when she secured her own rebound in the center of the circle and then fired it back inside the right post for the equalizer.
 
With the 6:11 remaining in the half, Catholic was whistled for a penalty stroke, and Muneses took the opportunity for the Generals (5-0). She shot low and to the left to beat junior goalkeeper Maeve McCarthy, who entered the game just to defend the penalty.
 
The 3-2 advantage proved to be the difference, but the Blue and White added one more goal in the final minute, as first-year forward Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored on an empty cage, after Catholic pulled the goalkeeper while attempting to tie the contest.
 
The Generals led in shots in the game, 20-10, and took five penalty corners compared to four by the Cardinals.
 
Senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) tallied one goal and one assist. She registered the game's first goal just 4:51 into the opening period. She stole the ball at midfield and then only had the keeper to beat, which she did just inside the right post.
 
Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) stopped seven shots with two goals allowed in 60 minutes. Senior Maysen Elliott played 55:31 for Catholic, making eight saves with two goals allowed.
 
The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they host 18th-ranked Centre at 12:00 pm.
