LEXINGTON, Va. – In the final non-conference contest of the regular season, the second-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team claimed a thrilling 2-1 win over No. 15 Christopher Newport at home on Friday evening.
The win marked the 100th for head coach Mike Singleton, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the program. He now carries an overall record of 100-26-15 (0.762). The win improved the Generals to 6-0-1 overall, while the Captains fall to 3-2-2 overall with the loss.
W&L struck first early in the match, when the team won a corner kick in the fifth minute. Senior midfielder
Connor Wharton (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) hit an in-swinging cross to the back post where senior defender
Jack Rawlins (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) headed the ball into the back of the net.
The Generals claimed their second goal of the contest in the 48th minute when junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) received a through-ball pass from sophomore forward
Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) at the top of the 18. Bass let the ball lead him inside the box, before he one-timed a right-footed shot into the top-right corner of the frame.
The Captains responded just two minutes later when they were awarded a penalty kick following a foul inside the right side of the box. Senior defender Cory Hogge was selected to take the shot and he scored inside the left post.
The second-half was hotly contested and came right down to the very end. The teams combined for 19 total shots in the final 45 minutes, with Christopher Newport edging the Generals, 10-9. All told, the Captains held a slim shot advantage for the game, 17-14.
Bass's goal came on one of his two shots in the game, and it was his team-high tying fourth goal of the season. Rawlins' goal was his second of the year, while Zimmerman logged his first assist of the season. Bass was one of five players to lead the Generals' offense with two shots each, while nine different players combined for the team's 14 total shots.
