LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 2 Washington and Lee men's soccer team used a six-goal second half to highlight an 8-2 win over Guilford in the team's ODAC opener on Sunday afternoon on Watt Field.
With a 2-1 lead heading into the second half, sophomore forward
Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) scored off an assist from first-year midfielder
Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) in the 47th minute to kick-start the six-goal half for the Generals (7-0-1, 1-0-0 ODAC). The team posted its six second-half goals in a 24-minute span, concluding with a score from senior midfielder
George Biddle (Del Mar, Calif./Pacific Ridge) in the 71st minute.
Junior midfielder
Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) scored the team's fourth goal in the 51st minute, and proceeded to assist on the next two, which were scored first-year defender
Lucas Pleasants (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) (53') and first-year midfielder
Asa Tuke (Millerton, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) (61'). Tuke scored again just under four minutes later, before Biddle put a cap on the W&L scoring
Guilford's (5-2-0, 0-1-0 ODAC) goals were scored by junior forward Kenny Nzekwe in the 29th minute and junior midfielder Ryan Doyle in the 90th minute. W&L junior midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Nyers Park) (24') and sophomore defender
Park Bruner (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International) (43') posted the W&L first-half goals.
W&L's six goals in the second half marked the second time in the last three games the team logged at least five in a single half, while the eight goals tied the most scored in a contest since an 8-0 win over Emory & Henry on October 3, 2018. The Generals scored seven goals in the first half of that game.
The Generals' eight goals and seven assists came from 10 different players, led by four-point performances from Tuke and Kutsanzira. Bass and Zimmerman both logged three points on a goal and an assist each, while junior defender
Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) and junior midfielder
John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) contributed one assist apiece.
Senior goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (7-0-1) earned the win after he made one save and allowed one goal in 70:22. Junior
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) covered the final 19:38.
For the Quakers, Nzekwe led the team with four shots and two attempts on goal. Doyle's goal came on his only shot of the afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Roman Robinson (5-2) played all 90 minutes and made 11 saves.
W&L finished the game with a shot advantage of 36-6, including a 25-3 edge in the second half. Corner kicks favored the Generals, 6-4, for the game.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 2, when they host Lynchburg at 1:00 pm in a rematch from a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime W&L win on September 11.
