LEXINGTON, Va. – Three second-half goals helped the Washington and Lee women's soccer team pull away to a 4-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Generals improve to 10-0 overall and advance to their first ODAC Championship game since the 2016 season. Their 10-0 mark also matches the program record set in 1997 for the longest winning streak to begin a season. The Marlins conclude their season at 5-3-1 overall with the loss.
Junior defender
Chloe Rapier (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) scored just 2:31 into the game, as she headed in a corner kick that was taken by first-year defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day). Grainger replicated her assisting efforts in the 46th minute, as another corner cross found the head of sophomore defender
Caroline Lawson (White Post, Va./Highland School) to give W&L a 2-0 lead.
First-year defender
Caroline Christianson (Annandale, Va./WT Woodson) scored the final two goals for the Generals in a 1:23 span late in the second half. She headed in a cross from senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) from close range in the 82nd minute, before knocking in a centering pass from senior forward
Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) in the 84th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (9-0) made a season-high four saves to earn the win, one of which came on a shot from inside the six-yard box to preserve the then two-goal lead. Coombs now has three shutouts this season and 13 for her career.
Christianson's goals were her second and third of the season, while Grainger's two assists give her four for the campaign. Rapier's and Lawson's goals went down as the second of the season for both players, while Hoeh took a game-high six shots and added her second assist of the year.
Virginia Wesleyan first-year midfielder Adrianna Gunther attempted a team-high three shots, while first-year forward Gracie Mullens and sophomore defender Sam Crawford shot twice each and combined for three shots on goal. First-year keeper Rachel Quigley (3-2) made four saves in 90 minutes of action.
W&L finished the contest with a 17-11 advantage in shots, with a 9-3 edge in the first half. The Generals earned two corner kicks in each half, while the Marlins earned none for the game.
The Generals will host the No. 2 seed Bridgewater in the ODAC Championship game on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
