Women's Soccer falls on penalty kicks in ODAC Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. – After 110 minutes of play yielded a 0-0 draw, the Washington and Lee women's soccer team fell on penalty kicks, 4-2, to Bridgewater in the ODAC Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals conclude their season with a 10-0-1 overall record, while the Eagles' season ends at 10-1-1 overall.

In the penalty shootout, the Eagles made all four of their attempts, while W&L sophomore midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and senior forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) scored for the Generals. W&L had two shots hit off the post, with the second coming in the fourth round to clinch the title for Bridgewater.

The Generals' prime chance at scoring in regulation came in the 60th minute when a Bridgewater foul in the box gave W&L a penalty kick opportunity. Senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) stepped up for the shot, but Bridgewater keeper Sydney Davis made a diving save just inside the left post to keep the game scoreless.

The W&L defense held its ground firmly throughout the game, but especially after the first half, as junior keeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) was needed to make just two saves over the final 65 minutes of play.

Hoeh was the leading shot-taker for W&L, as she attempted four times and put one on goal. First-year defenders Louisa Bynum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) came in next with three shots each and two shots on goal combined. Coombs (9-0-1) played all 110 minutes in goal and made five saves.

For the Eagles, junior midfielder Hanna Randolph attempted a game-high five shots and put two on goal. Senior midfielder Rachel Bullard came off the bench and shot three times. Davis (8-1-1) played the entirety of the game and also made five saves.

At the conclusion of the game, Hoeh, junior defender Chloe Rapier (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and sophomore midfielder Caitlin Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) were named to the 11-player All-ODAC Tournament Team.

The teams finished the game with a total of 10 corner kicks, six of which were taken by W&L, while Bridgewater edged the Generals, 20-18, in total shot attempts.
