LEXINGTON, Va. – The top-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored twice in both halves in its 4-0 win over eighth-seeded Guilford in the ODAC Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Generals (9-0) got on the board early, as junior forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) assisted senior forward
Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) in the fourth minute. Leding played a long touch into the left side of the box, kept control after a challenge from a defender, and found von Rosenberg with a centering pass for the tap-in score.
In the 39th minute, sophomore forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) gathered the ball at midfield and brought it all the way up to the top of the 18-yard box where she fired with her left foot inside the right post for her fourth goal of the season.
W&L added to its lead in the 60th minute, as Leding saved a pass on the endline, turned to her right and found senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) cutting towards the goal. Leding hit Hoeh in stride, as Hoeh one-timed a right-footed attempt inside the left post.
The Generals capped the scoring in the 88th minute when junior midfielder
Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) took a free kick from near midfield that found the head of first-year defender
Caroline Christianson (Annandale, Va./WT Woodson) around the penalty spot. Christianson's header was placed perfectly over the keeper and found the back of the net.
Hoeh and White led the Generals' offense with five shots each. Hoeh's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season and von Rosenberg netted her fifth. Leding's two assists doubled her season total to four, also a team best. Christianson and Becker tallied three shots each on the day.
Junior goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (8-0) earned the win, but was not required to make a save in 61:46 of action. Junior
Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) played the final 28:14 and made one save.
For the Quakers, sophomore midfielder Kayla Gumula and junior forward McKaley Boston each shot once to produce Guilford's two shots in the game. First-year goalkeeper Ady Franken (1-3) took the loss after she made eight saves across all 90 minutes.
W&L held a 23-2 overall shot advantage in the game and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Both margins were evenly distributed across both halves, as the Generals held a 12-1 shot advantage and a 4-0 corner edge in the first half.
The Generals advance to the ODAC Semifinals on Friday, which will be hosted at Watt Field. They will face the winner of the Lynchburg/Virginia Wesleyan quarterfinal matchup.
