LEXINGTON, Va. – The 16th-ranked Mary Washington men's tennis team snapped a four-match winning streak for 32nd-ranked Washington and Lee, defeating the Generals by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at the Upper Courts.
The doubles competition proved tight, but the Eagles came away with a 2-1 lead heading into singles. The team of senior
Noah Tapp (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) and junior
Alex Fedor (Salem, Ore. / South Salem) recorded an 8-7 (4) win at No. 2 doubles, downing UMW's Rishi Charan Shankar and Priyan Desilva. The match at No. 1 doubles proved pivotal, and the Mary Washington team of Peter Leese and Moses Hutchinson came away with tight 8-6 win over the team of first-year
Harry Kittredge (Alexandria, Va. / The Field School) and junior
T.J. Rudden (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes).
In singles action, the Generals took straight set wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6, but it wasn't enough to pull out the victory. First-year
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) defeated Cole Tecce at No. 3 singles after Tecce was forced to retire. The score was 6-3, 5-5, ret. Tapp knocked off Leese at No. 5 singles by a score of 7-5, 6-4 and Rudden defeated Desilva at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Washington and Lee is now 7-2 overall on the season, while Mary Washington improved to 3-2 overall.
The Generals will now break for finals, before returning to action on April 17 with a road match at Southern Virginia at 11:00 am.
