BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team had five players tally a goal en route to a 6-0 victory at Bridgewater on Tuesday in the regular-season finale for W&L.
The Generals (7-1, 7-1 ODAC) scored their first goal of the game with the clock ticking under two minutes in the first. Sophomore forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) received a pass on the left side just outside the circle.
Muneses then dribbled toward the center of the circle, abruptly stopped and flipped a shot into the top right corner of the cage to give the Blue and White a 1-0 lead with 1:15 left in the period. The tally, her fourth of the year, was nearly identical to her goal at Randolph-Macon on Friday.
The second score for W&L came three minutes into the second. Sophomore forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) fired a shot from the center of the circle at the cage, but it was saved. Sophomore forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) corralled the rebound on the right side, and quickly passed the ball across the front of the cage.
Standing adjacent of the left post, senior forward
Grace Amaden (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) one-touched the ball into the goal. W&L maintained the 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the third with 10:55 left in the stanza, sophomore forward
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) stole a pass near midfield. She dribbled past two Eagles' (3-4, 3-4 ODAC) defenders, and passed to Amaden on the left side of the circle. Amaden redirected the ball inside the right post for the score to extend the lead to 3-0.
Later in the third with just over a minute left in the quarter, the Blue and White stretched the margin to 4-0. After intercepting a pass, Tobeason carried the ball into the circle. Once the goalie left her line, Tobeason slipped a pass to sophomore forward
Alexis Parks (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill), standing at the left post. Parks stuffed the ball into the cage for her fifth goal of the year.
Over the final 15 minutes of the contest, the Generals added two more tallies to their total. Sophomore midfielder
Sarah Allen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) notched the first off a pass from first-year forward
Allison Pitts (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School), and then first-year midfielder
Ally Hoffmann (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) registered her first collegiate goal off an assist from Allen.
The Blue and White dominated in shots, 33-6, and took 10 penalty corners compared to five for Bridgewater. Junior goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played the full 60 minutes, making five saves, to earn her fourth shutout of the season and the 10th of her career. The four shutouts are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in program history.
Amaden led the team with two goals and extended her team-best season total to 10. Tobeason had two assists, which gives her five this year, and Allen finished with one goal and one assist.
Junior goalkeeper Brooke Hamm saw all 60 minutes of action for the Eagles and made 15 saves.
The Generals have clinched the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, and will host the winner of the quarterfinal contest between the No. 3 seed and the No. 6 seed in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Friday, April 16. The full seedings for the conference tournament won't be available until the conclusion of the regular season, which runs through this Friday, April 9.
