W&L Field Hockey Rallies for a 2-1 Win over Roanoke in ODAC Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Va. — The second-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals in the final period to rally for a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Roanoke on Friday in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament.

The Maroons (6-3) scored just 1:40 into the first quarter off the stick of senior forward Emilee Wooten to assume a 1-0 lead. The margin would hold for the next 47:40 of game action, as neither team scored until the fourth.

Four minutes into the final period, the Generals (8-1) secured the ball, and sophomore forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) pushed ahead on a counter attack down the right side. She carried the ball into the circle, and as she approached the cage, she sent it through the goalkeeper's legs. Senior forward Grace Amaden (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton), just to the left of the goalie, stuffed the ball over the line for the equalizer.

Roanoke was whistled for a penalty corner with six minutes left in the contest, and junior forward Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) inserted the ball on the left side. She sent a pass to sophomore forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg), who took one touch, and then struck the ball into the top right corner of the cage for the game winner. It marked her fifth goal of the year, and it sent the Generals to the ODAC Championship game for the fifth time in program history.

The Blue and White led in shots in the contest, 17-12, and penalty corners, 12-6. Junior defender Grace MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft School) helped secure the victory with a defensive save in the third, that kept W&L within one tally.

Junior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) stopped six shots to earn her eighth win of the year. Her counterpart, junior Hannah Roerden, made a career-best nine saves.

The Generals will play for the ODAC Championship on Sunday at top-seeded Lynchburg. The start time for the contest is still to be determined.
