Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) grabbed a season-best 14 draw controls to lead the top-seeded and second-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory over fourth-seeded Lynchburg on Friday at Watt Field in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament, as Head Coach
Brooke Diamond O'Brien secured the 200th victory of her career.
The game was tied, 1-1, after the first four minutes of play, but then a goal by sophomore midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) ignited a 4-0 run, capped on two goals by Bishop, to give the Generals (12-0) a 5-2 lead with 19:48 left in the half.
The Hornets (10-6) answered with two goals to trim the lead to 5-3 with 17:31 remaining in the period. Junior attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) then scored unassisted two minutes later, which was the first of four straight W&L goals, as the team assumed a 9-3 lead with 12:55 left in the stanza.
Lynchburg recorded its fourth goal of the half with 11:19 on the clock, but the Blue and White ended the period with four straight goals, highlighted by two more tallies from Bishop, to take a 13-4 advantage into the break.
The Generals extended their spurt in the second half, registering the first three goals of the stanza en route to the 18-8 victory. W&L dominated in draw controls in the contest, 21-7, leading to a 31-17 advantage in shots.
Along with Bishop's six points, senior attacker
Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) totaled one goal and four assists for five points. Sophomore attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) ended the game with four goals.
Faria had two goals and one assist, while sophomore midfielder
Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and junior midfielder
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) each had two goals. Cavallo, senior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and first-year midfielder
Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) all had one goal.
The 14 draw controls for Petras mark the most by a W&L player this season. Junior defender
Caroline Hall (Henrico, Va./Collegiate School) and first-year goalkeeper
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) each had three ground balls. Senior defender
Catherine Arrix (Darien, Conn./Darien), Lisovicz and sophomore defender
Sam Van Belle (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) all had two caused turnovers.
Kranich played all 60 minutes in goal, making four saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Broughton played 15:47 for the Hornets, making two saves and allowing eight goals. First-year Sydney Miller saw the final 44:13 of action, stopping five shots with 10 goals allowed.
Senior attacker Kelsi Trevisan scored four goals to lead Lynchburg, while senior attacker Nicki Santora added three tallies.
Coach O'Brien now has a 200-56 record in 256 contests for a .781 winning percentage in her 14 seasons.
The victory extends the team's record-setting home win streak to 28 games, dating back to March 17, 2018.
With the win, the Generals advance to the ODAC Championship game, and W&L will host second-seeded Roanoke on Sunday in the contest. The official game time will be announced on Saturday.
