No. 2 Generals Claim ODAC Championship with 17-9 Win Over No. 25 Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. — The second-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team outscored 25th-ranked and second-seeded Roanoke, 11-4, in the second half en route to a 17-9 victory to claim the ODAC Championship on Sunday at Watt Field. Senior attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) also tied the program's career assist record in the contest.
 
This is the 11th consecutive conference championship for the Generals (13-0), dating back to 2010 and the 21st in program history.
 
W&L held a one-goal advantage (6-5) over the Maroons (9-4) at halftime, but then senior midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored the first two goals of the second in just 1:08 to extend the Blue and White's lead to 8-5. With 27 minutes left in the game, first-year attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored unassisted, and then sophomore attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) recorded a tally three minutes later.
 
Just 29 more seconds ticked off the clock when sophomore midfielder Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) scored off an assist from Shelley to push the margin to six (11-5). First-year midfielder Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) then capped the 6-0 run with an unassisted goal with 19:50 remaining in the contest to give the Generals a 12-5 lead.
 
Over the final 19 minutes of the game, W&L edged Roanoke, 5-4, to secure the ODAC title, 17-9.
 
Shelley totaled one goal and three assists to move her career total to 136, tying the W&L all-time assists record. Leslie Bogart '03 was the previous sole record holder. Shelley now has 45 assists on the year, which is the second-highest single-season total in program history. Shelley already holds the single-season record, when she had 53 in 2019.
 
Junior attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) led the Generals with a career-best six goals, including four in the first half. Bishop totaled three goals, while Schwab notched one goal and two assists.
 
Sophomore midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) tallied one goal and one assist, and Cavallo and Thomson each had one goal. Lisovicz and junior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) led the team with five draw controls apiece.
 
Sophomore defender Sam Van Belle (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) registered a game-high four caused turnovers, and first-year defender Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had a team-best three ground balls. First-year goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) totaled six saves, while playing the full 60 minutes.
 
Following the contest, Shelley, Bishop, Van Belle, Faria and first-year attacker Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) were named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team.
 
Junior midfielder Lilly Blair led Roanoke with three goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Emerson Foster added two goals and one assist, and first-year attacker Tiernan Connor had three goals.
 
Junior goalkeeper Carly Schoudel totaled six saves with 17 goals allowed in 60 minutes.
 
The victory extends the team's record-setting home win streak to 29 games, dating back to March 17, 2018.
 
With the victory, the Generals have earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. W&L has already been selected as a host for the first and second rounds next weekend, but will wait until the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 10:30 am to find the time and the opponent for its next contest.
