LEXINGTON, Va. – Two goals in the second half powered the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater at Watt Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals close the regular season with a perfect 8-0 overall record, 7-0 in conference, and sit atop the ODAC standings heading into the conference tournament. The Eagles drop to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in conference with the loss.
After the first half went scoreless, the Generals took the lead in the 48th minute when the ball was played up to senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga). Hoeh dribbled up the field and passed off to junior forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) just at the top of the box. Leding stopped the ball, cut to her left, and found first-year defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) making a run inside. Grainger's only touch was her shot with her left foot past the keeper and inside the right post.
The W&L lead doubled to two goals in the 61st minute, with Hoeh starting the opportunity again. She played a ball up long to find sophomore midfielder
Caitlin Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summitt Country Day) on the right side. Barnes trapped the ball, dribbled into the box, cut to her left and lofted a left-footed attempt into the top left corner of the frame for her first goal of the season.
Bridgewater responded in the 72nd minute with a goal from first-year midfielder Alicia Keo. Junior defender Emily York sent a cross into the box that was knocked away by the W&L defense. But the ball came right to Keo who one-timed a shot inside the left post. W&L sealed the win by not allowing a single shot following the Bridgewater goal.
Hoeh, Leding and senior forward
Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) all shot three times in the game to lead the W&L offense, with a combined five shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (7-0) made three saves to earn the win. Her second save of the contest came in the 51st minute when a cross came in and was redirected towards the goal from inside the six-yard box, but Coombs stood her ground and caught the shot to preserve the one-goal lead.
Senior forward Cyan Coates and junior midfielder Hanna Randolph both shot a Bridgewater-high two times in the contest, with Coates' only shot on goal resulting in Coombs' 51st-minute save. Senior Sydney Davis (6-1) took the loss as the Eagles' keeper, as she made seven saves across the 90 minutes.
W&L outshot the Bridgewater 16-8 overall in the game, including 8-3 in the second half, and put 10 shots on goal to four for the Eagles.
With a 7-0 ODAC record heading into the ODAC tournament, the Generals have clinched the top seed and will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, with the time and opponent yet to be determined.
