GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team split its road doubleheader on Saturday at Guilford with a game one 11-8 win and a 10-9 game two loss.
The Generals (4-9, 4-9 ODAC) scored the first seven runs of the opener, and did so across the first two innings. Sophomore center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) had the big hit in the first, a two-run double. In the second, the first four Generals hit doubles to score three runs, as sophomore third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison), sophomore left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and junior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) all had one RBI in the frame.
After the Quakers (1-7, 1-7 ODAC) scored a pair in the bottom of the second, W&L answered with consecutive sacrifice flies in the top of the fourth off the bats of junior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) and junior designated hitter
Jackson Gazin (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin School of Md.).
Two more runs for the Quakers in the fourth put the score at 9-4, before W&L added a run in the seventh on a balk and in the eighth on a single by senior catcher
Jack Giardino (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School).
The Quakers capped the scoring in game one with a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from senior left fielder Saunders Joplin.
Senior shortstop
Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) put the Generals on the board in the top of the first in game two with a single. Guilford responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, with two runs coming on a single from first-year left fielder Ryan Croom.
Guilford added a run in the second, but the Generals tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run fourth inning on RBI's from Salvino, first-year catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va./John Champe) and first-year right fielder
Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va./James Madison). Guilford regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 5-4, but W&L scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead, as junior catcher
Luke Czepiel (Devon, Pa./Conestoga), Bassi and Salvino each had RBI's in the frame.
The Quakers' comeback began in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single from junior second baseman Hayes Henderson. W&L added its ninth run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run from Bassi, but Guilford scored one run on a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh and then went ahead for good on two bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the eighth.
Salvino and Bassi led the charge on offense for W&L, as Salvino totaled three hits and drove in two runs in both games. Bassi went 2-for-4 and 3-for-5 in the games, drove in a total of three runs and scored a total of four times. Erdmann had three hits, three runs and a run driven in, while Satterfield went 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI between the two games.
Guilford sophomore first baseman Isaiah Hairston logged three hits in game two, four on the day, scored twice and drove in a run. Bailey had three RBI in game two and scored once in both games, while Joplin and Croom drove in two runs each.
Senior righty
Matt Whitely (Salem, Va./Hidden Valley) (2-1) earned the win in game one, while Perkins earned his first career save. Whitely allow four unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts across 4.0 innings and Perkins pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout. Senior right-hander
Peyton McCann (2-2) was tagged with the loss in game two after he allowed five runs over 3.1 innings.
First-year righty Chase Wade was the winning pitcher in game two, while Nico Clark earned a save. Wade entered with two outs in the fifth and totaled 3.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Senior Tanner Hobbs was tagged with the loss in game one, as the Generals scored seven runs (three earned) on eight hits off Hobbs in 2.0 innings of work.
The Generals will return home for their next game on Wednesday, as they host Bridgewater at 6:00 pm.
