LEXINGTON, Va. – After a tightly contested ball game went tied, 2-2, through nine innings, Bridgewater pushed eight runs across the plate in the 10th, as the Washington and Lee baseball team fell to the Eagles, 10-2, on Wednesday night.
With the game tied at two runs apiece, the Eagles (6-6, 5-5 ODAC) strung together eight consecutive hits, seven of which were singles, to plate seven of their eight runs in the final inning. A two-run triple from senior second baseman Kevin Navedo was the first of the eight consecutive hits, and it also untied the game. Bridgewater scored its final run on a bases loaded ground out to first from junior first baseman Brett Tharp.
Trailing by a score of 2-1 in the top of the ninth, Bridgewater senior center fielder Jacob Grabeel reached on an error and then scored two batters later on a single by pinch hitter Mason Mitchell.
The Generals (4-10, 4-10 ODAC) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth when junior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) led off with a single. He then advanced to second on a balk, and scored two batters later when first-year catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va./John Champe) singled to left center.
W&L scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Sophomore third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison), sophomore left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and senior shortstop
Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) each hit consecutive singles to start the frame, with Volpicelli's knock driving in Erdmann.
The Eagles answered in the top of the fifth, as a double down the left-field line from junior left fielder Jarret Biesecker scored first-year catcher Brandan Hartman.
Erdmann and Volpicelli had two hits each for the W&L offense, while Keuhner's RBI base hit in the eighth was his lone hit of the night. Senior right-hander
Peyton McCann (Midlothian, Va./James River) (2-3) was the losing pitcher, as he allowed six earned runs while covering 1.2 innings from the eighth to the 10th.
Biesecker led the Eagles with a 4-for-5 performance, with two RBI and a run. Grabeel had three hits and scored twice and Navedo had two hits and two RBI. Junior southpaw Tucker Hrasky (1-0) earned the win after he allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
The Generals will get back on the diamond on Saturday, April 17, with a road doubleheader at Ferrum. Game one is slated to start at 12:00 pm.
