LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitters
Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and
Leah Green (Longwood, Fla./Lake Highland Preparatory School) combined for 29 kills to push the top-seeded and 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over eighth-seeded Eastern Mennonite in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym.
The Royals (4-9) won the first three points of the match, but the Generals (14-0) answered with six straight, capped on a kill by Gould, to grab a 6-3 advantage. EMU registered a kill to close the gap to 6-4, but then another kill by Gould started a 6-0 run to give W&L a 12-4 lead.
The margin was 17-9 later in the stanza, and then the Blue and White closed out the set with an 8-1 spurt to win the first, 25-10. In the second, the two teams were tied, 17-17, but three consecutive points, two coming on Gould kills, pushed the Generals in front, 20-17.
After a W&L attack error pulled EMU to within two (20-18), the Blue and White claimed five straight points to secure the second, 25-20. The Generals raced out to an 11-2 lead in the third on their way to a match-sealing, 25-19, win in the final set.
Gould hit .415 to notch a season-best 20 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks. Green registered a season-high nine kills on 17 swings for a .471 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blocker
Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) totaled six kills, five blocks, five digs and three aces. Sophomore setter
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) tallied 32 assists, six digs and three blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) had 13 digs, while senior outside hitter
Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) added 12.
The Generals registered a .320 hitting percentage as a team, totaling 43 kills on 100 attempts with 11 errors. EMU hit just .118 with 29 kills on 110 attempts with 16 errors.
Senior outside hitter Hannah Johnson recorded a team-best 13 kills to lead the Royals. First-year defensive specialist Abby Kaufman contributed 10 digs.
The marks the first time in program history the Blue and White has started a season 14-0.
W&L advances to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament with the victory. The Generals will host both semifinals and the championship match on Saturday. The times for the matches will be announced on Thursday. The Blue and White will take on fifth-seeded Bridgewater in its semifinal.
