Generals fall at Bridgewater, 5-2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team saw its three-game winning streak end on Wednesday with a 5-2 road defeat to Bridgewater.

Eagles (11-11, 10-10 ODAC) senior second baseman Kevin Navedo put Bridgewater ahead in the bottom of the third with an RBI double, and he then added to the lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the sixth, W&L (8-12, 8-12 ODAC) sophomore left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) cut the team's deficit to 3-2 with a two-run single to left center. But the Bridgewater pitching staff shut the Generals' offense down for the remainder of the game, while the offense added a run on a wild pitch in the sixth and the game's final run on an error in the eighth.

Perkins finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk at the plate, while also tossing four innings and allowing three earned on seven hits to take the loss (1-1). First-year third-baseman Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) notched a team-high two hits, and senior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) went 1-for-3 with a run.

First-year right-hander Ashwin Suresh (Glen Allen, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) and senior righty Matt Whitely (Salem, Va./Hidden Valley) pitched two innings each in relief for W&L and combined to allow two runs (one earned) on one hit.

For the Eagles, Navedo, junior first baseman Brett Tharp and sophomore shortstop Jeffrey Snider all posted two hits each. Navedo finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and two walks, Tharp was 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks and Snider went 2-for-4 with a run.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Hunter Clever (1-2) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings. Sophomore William Flanagan earned a save for allowing no runs over the final 3.1 innings.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they close their regular season ODAC slate with a road doubleheader at Emory & Henry. Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.
