EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team closed out the ODAC portion of its schedule on Saturday with a 7-5 win and 7-6 loss on the road at Emory & Henry.
The Wasps (6-17, 5-17 ODAC) struck first in game one when senior first baseman Joe Tolone drove in a run on a single. W&L (9-13, 9-13 ODAC) gained the lead in the fourth inning, however, when first-year right fielder
Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va./James Madison) singled down the right field line, followed by a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of first-year third baseman
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School).
The Generals opened the game up in the sixth inning when Satterfield and Senders had back-to-back RBI knocks. Junior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) then blasted his third home run of the season to right center, a three-run shot to give W&L a 7-1 lead.
E&H scored three runs in the seventh inning, two on a home run to center from senior designated hitter Chandler Kezele, and one on a fielder's choice. The Wasps' fifth and final run of the game came across in the eighth on an error, but W&L sophomore righty
Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) set E&H down in order in the ninth to clinch the win.
In game two, the Wasps were trailing, 6-4, entering the bottom of the eighth but, after loading the bases with one out, senior center fielder Hayden Milley hit a three-run double to put E&H back in front for the final time. The Generals put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the ninth, but two straight fly outs ended the game.
The Wasps took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Milley singled to center. The Generals answered with two runs on an error and a ground out in the top of the second, but Kezele walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to re-tie the score, 2-2.
In the third, E&H sophomore catcher Nathan Treadway hit a two-run home run to left center to give his side a 4-2 advantage. W&L sophomore right fielder
Jamie Abt (Rye, N.Y./Rye) then cut the W&L deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fourth with a single, before sophomore left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) put the Generals back in front, 5-4, with a two-run double to left.
The Generals tacked on their final run in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a sac fly to left from junior
Jackson Gazin (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin School of Md.).
Bassi led the way for the W&L offense for the day, as he went 4-for-9 at the plate, with two hits in both games, and added totals of two runs and three RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tallied three hits and a run between the two games, while sophomore center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) went 3-for-9 and scored three times.
Senior right-hander
Mason Shuffler (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) (2-0) was the winning pitcher in game one, as he logged 7.0 innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts. Hughes tossed the final two frames and gave up one unearned run on one hit to record the save. Senior righty
Matt Whitely (Salem, Va./Hidden Valley) (3-2) was the pitcher of record in game two, allowing three runs over the final four innings.
Milley had a big day at the plate for the Wasps, going 6-for-9 with two runs in game one and four RBI in game two. Senior shortstop Caleb Haynes went 2-for-5 with three runs scored in game two, while Tolone tallied three hits, a run and an RBI in game one.
Senior righty Noah Griffin (1-7) was the game one losing pitcher after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits. Senior right-hander Jordan Smith (2-1) was the winning pitcher in game two, as he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit.
The Generals will close the 2021 regular season on Tuesday when they face Mary Baldwin at 6:30 pm at home.
